Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda's smallest savannah park and the closest one to Kampala, reached in roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by road, which makes it the country's go-to stop for travelers short on time or breaking up the long drive southwest to Bwindi. Its 370 square kilometers of acacia woodland and open grassland sit around five lakes, the largest of which, Lake Mburo itself, gives the park its name and its boat safaris.

Katonga Wildlife Reserve

Katonga Wildlife Reserve follows the Katonga River and its wetlands between Lake Mburo and Kibale, in a flatter, less-visited stretch of western Uganda. It functions as an elephant corridor linking the Queen Elizabeth ecosystem to the north, and its papyrus swamps hold one of Uganda's more accessible sitatunga antelope populations.

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake by surface area, shared between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, with its Ugandan shoreline anchored around Entebbe and the Ssese Islands. For most Uganda itineraries it's a relaxation and adventure stop rather than a wildlife destination, built around beaches, sport fishing, and island getaways.

Lake Albert

Lake Albert forms part of the Uganda-DRC border along the Albertine Rift Valley floor, fed in part by the Victoria Nile as it exits Murchison Falls. Its escarpment views, fishing villages, and role as the endpoint of the famous Murchison Falls boat cruise make it one of western Uganda's most scenic rift-valley lakes.

Source of the Nile, Jinja

Jinja, on Lake Victoria's northern shore, marks the point where the River Nile begins its roughly 6,650-kilometer run to the Mediterranean, identified by British explorer John Hanning Speke in 1862. Today the town is Uganda's adventure-tourism hub, built around white-water rafting, kayaking, and bungee jumping on the river's upper rapids.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary sits on a small forested island in Lake Victoria, roughly a 45-minute boat ride from Entebbe, and is home to around 50 orphaned and rescued chimpanzees unable to return to the wild. Run by the Chimpanzee Trust, it gives visitors a reliable, close chimpanzee encounter without a forest trek.

Lake Edward

Lake Edward sits within Queen Elizabeth National Park's ecosystem on the Uganda-DRC border, connected to Lake George by the Kazinga Channel, whose boat cruise, rather than the open lake itself, is how almost every visitor actually experiences this water body.
