Uganda Activity
Gorilla Trekking
Guided forest hikes to observe habituated mountain gorilla families in Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks.
- What Happens
- Rangers and trackers lead a small group through Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, following overnight trail signs left by a habituated gorilla family until you reach them, then allowing exactly one hour at close range.
- How It Feels
- The hike itself can run from under an hour to most of a day depending on where the gorillas moved overnight, but the hour spent with the family, often just meters away, is the part most travelers remember longest.
- Who It's For
- Reasonably fit travelers comfortable with uneven forest terrain, generally aged 15 and up under Uganda Wildlife Authority rules.
- Good to Know
- A permit costs $800 per person and must be booked well in advance, especially for the June to September and December to February peak seasons.

Where to do Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and Uganda's premier gorilla trekking destination, home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas across four trekking sectors.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park at just 33.7 square kilometers, tucked into the extreme southwest corner of the country where it meets Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo across the Virunga volcanic range. It protects the Ugandan slopes of three extinct volcanoes, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo, and is one of only two places in the country to see mountain gorillas, alongside Bwindi.
