The Burchell's zebra is a striking, single-hoofed herbivore celebrated for its coat of black-and-white striped patterns that vary per individual like a human fingerprint. Built with a short vertical mane and a barrel-shaped body, this social equid operates within tight-knit family units called harems, comprising a single dominant stallion, multiple mares, and their dependent offspring. As a specialized bulk grazer utilizing efficient hindgut fermentation, it targets coarse, short grass stems that other selective herbivores bypass.
From Our Guides
Lake Mburo hosts one of the largest concentrations of this striped equid in western Uganda, making them an unavoidable feature of the landscape. Burchell's Zebras dominate the open grassy valleys, grazing alongside impalas and topis in highly coordinated family harems. Because they are habituated to non-vehicular movement, they provide the primary target for the park’s signature horseback and biking safaris, allowing exceptionally close ground-level approaches.
- What Lake Mburo National Park Is Known For
Lake Mburo National Park is the only Ugandan national park with zebras and impalas present in real numbers, alongside elands, topis, buffaloes, and over 350 recorded bird species around its wetland fringes.
- Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park
The dry months of June through September and mid-December through February give the clearest game viewing, when animals cluster around the remaining water sources and the grass is short enough to spot zebra and eland from a distance. The dry season is also ideal for activities like cycling in the park and walking safaris.
The wet season (March-May, October-November) still allows a boat cruise and most game drives, just with thicker grass and muddy tracks.

Best Months to See Burchell's Zebra in Uganda
From our team
Burchell's Zebra
You won't find them in western parks like Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth, as they require specialized, low-cropped terrain. Instead, Lake Mburo National Park is the undisputed zebra capital of western Uganda, protecting over 5,000 individuals. What makes Mburo truly stand out is its lack of elephants, which allows you to try guided walking safaris, horseback rides, and mountain biking. There is nothing quite like biking right alongside wild zebras!

Lake Mburo National Park
I recommend booking a dedicated break here rather than treating the basin as a brief roadside stop on the way to the western gorilla forests. Lake Mburo National Park is a place where you learn about centuries of Ankole royal history and track savannah wildlife simultaneously. By skipping the traditional, closed-vehicle format, you will experience the wilderness from an entirely different physical perspective, and that gives a completely different feeling.
