The common ostrich is the largest living bird on Earth, a flightless giant recognized by its incredible size, long bare neck, and powerful legs built for speed. Reaching heights of up to nine feet, these birds possess the ability to sprint at speeds of up to 43 miles per hour, making them the fastest creatures on two legs. Operating within a social structure led by a dominant alpha cock and major hens, ostriches lay massive, armored communal eggs that can withstand the extreme weight of an incubating adult. They are capable of delivering a lethal kick to oncoming predators with their sharp, two-toed feet.

Common Ostrich

If you want to cross the ostrich off your wildlife checklist, you have to travel up to the far northeastern corner of the country. In Uganda, the common ostrich is completely restricted to Kidepo Valley National Park and the adjacent Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. Because they rely entirely on their keen eyesight and flat-out speed to survive, they love the wide-open, dry plains of the Kanangorok Hot Springs sector where predators can't easily sneak up on them.
