The Rothschild's giraffe (also known as the Baringo or Ugandan giraffe) is one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies on Earth, instantly distinguished by its exceptionally tall stature, pale orange-brown patches, and distinctive white "stockings" that lack markings below the knees. Sporting up to five horn-like ossicones on their heads, these are browsers that play a vital role in trimming the high canopy of acacia woodlands. Using their prehensile, 20-inch purplish-black tongues, they easily maneuver around fierce thorns to feed. Uganda is a place where conservation efforts have successfully protected and expanded their remaining populations across protected savannah networks.

From Our Guides

Murchison Falls holds Uganda's largest population of Rothschild's giraffe, one of the rarest giraffe subspecies in Africa. Small family groups move across the northern savanna's acacia woodland, often visible from the same Buligi tracks used for lion and elephant game drives, making this the single most reliable park in Uganda for a giraffe sighting on an ordinary game drive.

What Murchison Falls National Park Is Known For

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park, named for the point where the Nile forces through a gorge roughly seven meters wide before dropping into Murchison Falls itself and the "Devil's Cauldron," creating a deafening roar and a permanent mist bow(looks like a rainbow). It holds the country's largest population of the rare, light-colored Rothschild’s (Nubian) giraffe, alongside elephants, buffalo, and lions on its northern savanna.

A secondary waterfall, Uhuru Falls, split off from the main cataract around the time of Uganda’s independence in 1962 ("uhuru" means freedom in Swahili).

Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park

The dry seasons, late December through February and June through September, keep park roads in better condition for game drives and give the clearest views from the Nile boat cruise. The wetter months still run both activities, with muddier tracks and lusher scenery along the riverbanks.

Rothschild's Giraffe

Murchison Falls National Park has the largest population. A huge success story is the translocation of these giraffes across the Nile to the southern sector and into Lake Mburo National Park and Kidepo Valley. If you stay at a lodge near Lake Mburo, you might even get to do a walking safari to stand safely on foot near these towering animals: it completely changes your perspective on their scale!

Murchison Falls National Park

You haven't truly experienced Murchison until you take the Nile boat cruise toward the Devil’s Cauldron. As you get close, the boat deck literally starts vibrating under your feet, the roar of the water drowns out the engine, and you see a permanent mist bow at the falls: pure adrenaline! My tip: always do the hike to the top of the falls at sunset. It is spectacular under the golden Ugandan sky. Wishing you a fun stay!
