This Vervet Monkey is distinguished by its grizzled grey-green coat, black face, and a white fringe of fur framing its brow. Males possess conspicuous bright blue scrotums that serve as a visual marker of social dominance within the troop. They are agile climbers that navigate acacia branches with ease.

Vervet monkeys are the primate most travelers in Uganda see up close, often around lodge grounds at Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park rather than deep in the forest. They are highly vocal, with distinct alarm calls for snakes, birds of prey, and ground predators, each one different enough that researchers can tell which threat triggered it. Keep food out of sight. A vervet that has learned where lodge kitchens are will not hesitate to take it.

From Our Guides

These highly adaptive, cheeky monkeys are the most ubiquitous wild mammals in Entebbe. Characterized by their greenish-olive coats, black faces, and the males’ vibrant blue genitalia, they move comfortably across urban environments. They roam freely through hotel grounds, public beaches, roadside trees, and gardens, always on the lookout for a quick snack (so you must keep their food secure if you visit).

What Entebbe Is Known For

Entebbe is known for its airport, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Uganda's national zoo, home to rescued animals including chimpanzees and a shoebill stork), and its Lake Victoria shoreline with botanical gardens dating to 1898. It also has a calm environment.

Best Time to Visit Entebbe

Entebbe works as a stopover year-round, since its role is logistical rather than seasonal: every flight in or out of Uganda, and most safari starting points, routes through here regardless of season. You can travel here any time of the year.

Vervet Monkey

Keep your lodge windows latched tight, as these mischievous monkeys are expert thieves when it comes to unattended fruit or sugar packets on restaurant verandas.

Entebbe

If you're going to have a safari longer than 5 days, let Entebbe be the place that allows you to rest, whether before or after the safari. You'll have a better experience if you're rested.
