Year-round

The white rhino is a massive animal, ranking as the second-largest land mammal on Earth after the elephant. It is distinguished from its black rhino relative by a broad, square upper lip perfectly adapted for mowing down vast amounts of short savannah grasses, rather than browsing on branches. The white rhino carries two formidable horns composed entirely of compressed keratin. Despite their immense weight of up to two tons, white rhinos possess surprising agility and speed when charging. Because they are highly short-sighted, they rely heavily on their sharp senses of hearing and smell to navigate their territories and protect their calves within small social groups called crashes.

White Rhino

Rhinos were wiped out in Uganda during the civil unrest of the late 1970s and 80s, but they are making an incredible comeback with conservation efforts. Today, the only place to see them in the country is the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola, but they've been introduced to different places like Ajai Wildlife Reserve & Kidepo Valley. This is one of the most thrilling stops on a Ugandan safari because you get to track these two-ton giants on foot with an expert ranger! Walking just a few meters away from wild rhinos as they graze is a heart-pounding experience you will never forget.
