Striped Hyena in Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s most remote and ruggedly beautiful savanna wilderness, spanning 1,442 square kilometers in the extreme northeastern Karamoja region. Bordering South Sudan and Kenya, the park features a dramatic landscape dominated by the Narus and Kidepo valleys, flanked by the soaring Mount Morungole and rugged mountain ranges. Because it is isolated, it receives a fraction of the tourists found in western Uganda, providing an exclusive, untamed safari atmosphere reminiscent of Africa fifty years ago. The park protects a diverse ecosystem of montane forests and semi-arid savanna grasslands. It is home to 86 mammal species and over 460 bird species, including many found nowhere else in the country. Kidepo Valley National Park is known for Kidepo is renowned for its spectacular, crowd-free landscapes and harboring Uganda's unique wilderness predators, including the largest single herds of African Cape buffalo on the continent. Catching a glimpse of this solitary, nocturnal scavenger is an absolute rarity that feels like stepping into an ancient wilderness story. Smaller and far more secretive than their spotted relatives, striped hyenas are instantly recognizable by the vertical charcoal bands running down their silver-grey coats and a massive, bristly mane that stands erect when they are startled. To see one emerging from the shadows during a night drive is to witness pure caution; they move with a low, slinking trot, using their powerful jaws and keen scent to locate carcass remnants long abandoned by larger predators. It is an eerie, beautiful encounter that connects you deeply to the hidden night shift of the savannah. Best time to visit for this: September to March, with the prime window of the dry season from December to February, when wildlife congregates heavily around the permanent water sources of the Narus Valley.
From Our Guides
These are the most solitary(out of the hyenas) and nocturnal, acting primarily as scavengers, though they also eat fruits and small animals. They are the only hyena species found outside Africa, ranging into the Middle East and India. These solitary, beautifully patterned scavengers are completely absent from Uganda's wetter western parks. Encountering them requires incredible luck on a night safari; catching the shaggy, striped mane of this elusive carnivore as it silently patrols the Kidepo riverbeds is an exclusive privilege you won't find anywhere else.
