Walking Safari in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s most remote and ruggedly beautiful savanna wilderness, spanning 1,442 square kilometers in the extreme northeastern Karamoja region. Bordering South Sudan and Kenya, the park features a dramatic landscape dominated by the Narus and Kidepo valleys, flanked by the soaring Mount Morungole and rugged mountain ranges. Because it is isolated, it receives a fraction of the tourists found in western Uganda, providing an exclusive, untamed safari atmosphere reminiscent of Africa fifty years ago. The park protects a diverse ecosystem of montane forests and semi-arid savanna grasslands. It is home to 86 mammal species and over 460 bird species, including many found nowhere else in the country. Kidepo Valley National Park is known for Kidepo is renowned for its spectacular, crowd-free landscapes and harboring Uganda's unique wilderness predators, including the largest single herds of African Cape buffalo on the continent. What Happens
You meet your armed ranger and expert Huko Safaris guide for a safety briefing before walking directly into the wilderness. You follow game trails to identify animal tracks, droppings, and unique plant life while learning how indigenous groups utilize nature for medicine. Your guide constantly reads the wind direction, allowing you to safely approach larger mammals like zebras, giraffes, or antelopes without disturbing them.
How It Feels
The safety barrier of a vehicle is gone, replaced by a raw, immediate connection to the ground. Crunching twigs beneath your boots and the smell of wild sage keep you incredibly focused. Your heart beats faster when you realize you are walking the exact same paths used by wild animals.
Who It's For
Suits active travelers, couples, and nature lovers with moderate fitness who prefer an active, sensory experience over sitting in a car.
Good to Know
Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes or hiking boots are mandatory. Long trousers and earth-toned clothing help prevent insect bites and keep you camouflaged. Walks usually take place during the cool early morning hours and last between two to three hours, with a minimum age requirement of up to fifteen years depending on the reserve.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Clients always ask if the long trip north is worth it. Our answer is a definitive yes. Kidepo offers a profound, untouched wilderness you won't find in Uganda’s western parks, featuring endemic species like cheetahs and ostriches without any of the tourist crowds. Our insider tip: We highly recommend booking a domestic flight straight there; it bypasses the long drive and drops you directly into one of Africa's most exclusive, private wildlife spectacles.
